Nintendo to mull mergers and acquistions, not limited to video game companies

After a tough year with a flailing home console, Nintendo will consider assumptions about how to do business - that's according to president Satoru Iwata.

Speaking to Nikkei, Iwata stated that the company should "abandon old assumptions about our businesses", and that mergers and acquisitions of other companies was an option to be considered.

In a separate interview, Iwata confirmed that there were no plans to expand into any areas not part of the "entertainment industry". He did however say that any acquisitions would not necessarily be limited to the video game industry.

Another recurring note from the CEO was the plan to increase the expansion into emerging markets. All this would be possible thanks to Nintendo building up cash reserves - the so-called "war chest" - when the company was in profit. "Without savings", Iwata said, "we could not have recovered from a single failure in game systems. Even now, we can afford many options because of our robust financial standing."
