Nintendo to unveil smartphone strategy this week - reports

Nintendo will use its investor briefing later this week to outline a new smartphone strategy that will see first-party content released on mobiles - that's according to Nikkei.

The Japanese newspaper - a typically reliable source when it comes to Nintendo's core strategy announcements - claims that Nintendo will soften its position on the smartphone market, and release information and videos to users, designed to promote its full games across 3DS and Wii U. The report also states that free 'minigames' will also be released on mobile, although this has been translated in some quarters as demos for full games.

However, Nintendo has since issued a carefully worded statement reaffirming its position on the smartphone market, dismissing any plans to release "Nintendo software" or "minigames" on mobile.

The concept of using smartphones to market Nintendo products on Nintendo hardware, however, is a different issue, with company president Satoru Iwata long ago revealing plans to develop a Miiverse app, as well as an app to allow PC and smartphone users to purchase eShop content ready for download on 3DS and Wii U.
