Nintendo’s New Development Centre Delayed

Nintendo are looking to expand their output and staff numbers with a bigger physical presence in Japan, thanks to a new development centre intended to be ready by 2027.

The building in question, tentatively titled Corporate Headquarters Development Centre Building No 2 (catchy!), was to be 12 floors and constructed not far from Nintendo’s main HQ in Kyoto, Japan. Nintendo have already purchased the land, 10,000 square meters, for 5 billion yen, but plans for the building have been altered and the initial 2027 goal has been delayed.

Nintendo is anticipating a boost in demand for its products, which have already accelerated greatly in recent years due to the success of the Nintendo Switch, and software development continues to become more time-consuming thanks to higher fidelity graphics and customer demand for more content-rich titles.

Nintendo revealed they are planning to invest up to 100 billion yen to its internal game development, and 50 billion yen to its non-gaming entertainment software assets. With all of this in mind, Nintendo is considering the addition of extra floors on the upcoming building, which will delay its completion to 2028, and possibly even later.

Last year Nintendo hired 130 new graduates, which is an increase of 50% compared to 3 years ago. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa believes this is necessary, and similar growth will continue in the coming years to meet demand.

"The development resources required per piece of software are increasing. We would like to maintain the level of recruitment of the past few years."

Not only will the new building help with increasing development capabilities for upcoming videogames, Nintendo has also claimed they aim to direct resources to other areas outside of gaming, which is no doubt a nod to the recent success of the Super Mario Bros. Movie, which still stands as the number 1 highest grossing movie of the year, despite hot competition this Summer from the likes of Barbie and Oppenheimer.
