Nintendo's new StreetPass games rake in big cash

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has revealed that the new downloadable StreetPass games released for 3DS this summer have already generated big revenue for the company.

Speaking with Tokyo Keizai Online (via Siliconera), Iwata revealed that the four new games had generated over 400 million yen in sales since their release - in June for Japan and Europe and July for North America. That equates to around £2.64m or $4m. Not bad for a selection of downloadable time-wasters that received no mainstream marketing.

The four new StreetPass titles were a surprise release alongside a 3DS firmware update. The games are StreetPass Squad, where you leverage the help of your StreetPassers in a side-scrolling shoot 'em up; StreetPass Garden, where you cultivate your own garden and try to grow the 20 different breeds of flowers; StreetPass Battle, a strategy game where your Mii army cumulatively grows depending on how many Miis your StreetPassers have in their plaza; and StreetPass Mansion, an RPG in which you explore each floor of a spooky haunted house.

Perhaps more importantly, the StreetPass update lets you unlock dozens more hats and outfits for your Mii. Each StreetPass game costs £4.49, but you can buy all four in a combo pack for £13.49.
