Total sales of amiibo stand at just under 2.6 million in North America alone, as Nintendo confirmed the scale of the success of the NFC-enabled figurines.

The first wave of the figures, which can be used in combination with a range of Wii U and 3DS titles, released in November, and hit the sales landmark by the end of the year. Nintendo of America also confirmed that December was the most successful ever month for Wii U in the region.

This week's Nintendo Direct revealed even more amiibo figures to launch later this spring. Also confirmed were more titles that will soon be compatible with the figures, including Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, and the upcoming 3DS strategy title Codename STEAM. They'll join the likes of Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart 8, and Hyrule Warriors as having special amiibo features.
