Pokémon Black 2/White 2 dominate Japan, but do little for hardware

The latest Media Create charts are out, and this week saw the biggest release of the year so far eat up the headlines, for it was the week of Pokémon Black 2/White 2.

The wisdom of releasing the sequels on the nearly-eight-years-old DS may have been questioned, but few can argue with the magnitude of the game's performance. The games shifted over 1.5 million copies in two days. That's quite a bit under the record-smashing performance of Black & White, but it blows away the initial sales of Pokémon Platinum - arguably the previous and more comparable 'sequel-like' Pokémon release. Furthermore, the sales pretty much match the last mainline generation release, Pokémon Diamond & Pearl.

Elsewhere on the chart, Dragon Quest Monsters 3D continues its sterling march towards the million mark after overcoming stock problems. There's also a strong third week for Sony's quirky new IP Tokyo Jungle.

Here is the software chart for the week of June 18th to June 24th.

Despite the impact of Pokémon, little was gained by Nintendo's handhelds. Perhaps it's wrong to expect much more from DS in a nation that has long been saturated with the device. 3DS received a moderate bump, but it was never likely to be pushed massively from a non-3DS title. There's also the little matter of the recent reveal of the 3DS XL, which is due to hit Japan (and Europe) on July 28th.

Here's the hardware chart.
