Q&A: Luc Bernard Strikes Back
Posted 09 Jun 2008 at 15:02 by Nathan Whincup
Luc Bernard speaks to N-Europe to clear up some recent troubles and talk about Eternity's Child.
N-Europe has been closely following developments on Eternity's Child since its revelation for the Wii last year, and its migration to WiiWare. Developer Luc Bernard recently took part in an interview with KonsoliFIN where he made several regretful comments regarding casual gamers and his own game, Eternity's Child, to the anger of many fans. Wishing to set the record straighter than an arrow, Luc spoke to us to clarify his answers and tell us a bit more about Eternity's Child.
N-Europe: You recently took part in an interview with KonsoliFIN where you made a comment about casual gamers. Do you think your answer was taken out of context?
Luc Bernard: Well, I think people reached a conclusion on things too fast. I mean, I don't do casual games so that's why I was honest by saying that I do not care about casual gamers. There are loads of great games for casual gamers out on the market, and most Wii users moan about too many casual games on the console.
N-E: So you actually meant to say that you don't care about casual games?
LB: Well I dont hate casual gamers, it's just not the demographic I'm aiming for, it's like asking a rapper if he's going for the metal crowd.
N-E: You also stated that you're not happy with Eternity's Child, but many have misread this as you condemning the game. We know this is not the case, what would you like to say to potential customers about this?
LB: Well I never condemned the game, it's my first game after doing cell phone games, so it is quite good, it's well worth the 500 points, I am just a perfectionist and I will never be happy with what I do.
N-E: Given enough time and resources, what would you improve about Eternity's Child in order to perfect it?
LB: Well, I would have added loads more worlds and levels and characters, but WiiWare would not have held all that so it would have to be in sequels.
N-E: What would you say makes Eternity's Child worth its weight in points?
LB: Eternity's Child is one of the best looking games on WiiWare and also has a soundtrack that is the same quality as an AAA game, there isn't any platformer at that price either, so it will be good and affordable for people who don't want to download more NES and SNES games, I do think its worth more than 500 points but I would rather it be affordable for everyone, plus the gameplay is different, with a mixture of platforming and shooting elements.
N-E: So do you believe Eternity's Child remains a complete experience, given WiiWare's limits?
LB: Yes for a WiiWare game it's really worth it, as a retail title it would be a no, but as a WiiWare game I think it will be one of Wiiware's hits.
N-E: In regards to this, do you regret moving Eternity's Child to WiiWare from a retail release, or do you still feel this was a good move to reach a wider audience?
LB: Well it was a good move money wise, no one would clearly buy a retail 2D title, and since I could offer it cheaper more people will get to play the game.
N-E: Would you like to say anything else to console your fans?
LB: Erm, well, I don't think I have fans at this point, maybe after Eternity's Child is out.
N-E: Hopefully so. Now, this leaves time for our trademark random question!
LB: How many pugs do I plan to kidnap in the next 12 months?
N-E: I was thinking "Daddy or chips?", but... that works too, I guess.
LB: Daddy as in father? I would rather eat chips, but did you know in France, chips are crisps?
N-E: The phrase derives from some old McCain's oven chips adverts, where a little girl would be pondering for some reason over the question "Daddy or Chips?" Her father then proceeded to steal one of her chips, forcing the girl to say "Daddy!" I take it you've never seen them.
LB: Nope, I only saw the Milky Bar Kid.
N-E: Fair enough. So about the pugs?
LB: Well I haven't stolen them yet, I'll have to start with some pet stores.
