Reggie explains reasons for Switch app, confirms monthly VC games

The online capabilities of the Nintendo Switch were briefly mentioned in the event earlier this week and left gamers puzzled. Two things in particular that got people talking were the Switch app and monthly Virtual Console games through a subscription service, with viewers wondering if the app was the only way to communicate in game or whether it was merely an alternative option.

In an interview with Wired, Reggie explains that voice chat on the Nintendo Switch will take place through a smartphone app to avoid using 'bulky headsets' and confirms that the monthly Virtual Console games offered by the subscription will indeed be available for that month only, with the option to purchase them after the free month period is over.

"You’ve got access to that game for a period of time, and then after the month there’s a new selection. You’ll have the opportunity to buy it, but [after] that month we’ve moved on to another game.

"Instead of having some sort of bulky gamer headset, you’ll be able to do it right off your smartphone, put in your earbuds that you use for your standard mobile device. We think that’s a pretty sweet solution. That’s part of the overall opportunity that we see in a subscription service."

Whilst Reggie didn't outright claim the app is the only way to use voice chat on the Switch, the way it is worded and the dismissal of 'bulky headsets' paints a pretty clear picture. The other worry about the free VC games being available for one month only was also confirmed.

When questioned about Virtual Console purchases on Wii and Wii U and whether or not they would be transferable to Switch, Reggie couldn't confirm or deny anything but suggested we stay tuned as more information is to come.

"We recognise that some of our most passionate fans have spent quite a bit, whether it’s with Virtual Console on Wii or Wii U, and we recognise that consumers are rightly concerned about moving to Nintendo Switch without backward compatibility. My comment is: Stay tuned, we understand the concern, more information to come."
