Rumour: DSi Getting Skype?

Is a Skype app coming to the DSi? Details inside...

Rumours within the industry earlier this month had Nintendo tipped to take the iPhone head-on with phone capabilities for the DSi. Internet site TechRadar reports that its "highly likely" these phone capabilities could come in the form of a Skype application for the device.

Nintendo has always been against monthly contracts for services and the free-to-use Skype service seems perfect for the DSi (Skype apps are already available for the iPhone and PSP). Just this month at GDC, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto stated he was: "interested in [a system with which] when you're walking in town with your DS, you can use various services."

Says Skype:

"Whilst we can't comment on any future plans to bring Skype to Nintendo's DSi, it would technically be possible."

Technically possible you say? Then in the immortal words of Captain Jean-Luc: make it so...

Update: A Nintendo spokesperson has just announced: "We have no plans to release a Skype application for Nintendo DS or DSi." Hmm...
