Another batch of Wii successor rumours come courtesy of IGN. This time release dates, pricing and alternative names are all speculated.
With the Internet rumour mill going into overdrive when it comes to a possible Wii successor many fans are already beginning to get a bit fed up of conflicting information from all kinds of sources. IGN has reported another set of rumours, and gone on file as saying they are from a trusted source and wouldn't report them otherwise, to keep the discussions going.
According to their report Nintendo are considering naming the console Stream, although we'd imagine Valve wouldn't be too pleased about that as it sounds a lot like their service called 'Steam'. The rumour that the controllers would feature a screen has also been reiterated by IGN while they note that the design of the console makes it about as large as the original Xbox 360 and it "is likely to resemble a modernized version of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System".
Looking under the hood IGN states that the system is based on a revamped version of AMD's R700 GPU architecture and will outperform PlayStation 3's NVIDIA 7800GTX-based processor. The console's custom-built triple-core IBM PowerPC chipset are said to be similar to the Xbox 360 but the clocking speed will be faster. Nintendo are also said to be entering the high-definition age with 1080p output and the potential for stereoscopic 3D in the future.
IGN also suggest the console is being manufactured by Taiwanese company Foxconn, meaning that the manufacturing has not been affected by the earthquake and tsunami last month. They estimate the console will cost between $350 and $400 (240-275/212-242), based on manufacturing costs, but suggest it could be sold for a lower price if Nintendo decide to accept lower profit margins to encourage purchases.
They also claim that the console could be available for sale as early as mid-October, contradicting previous rumours that it will be released in late 2012. However, they note that Nintendo may delay the release to ensure they have enough stock.
As always Nintendo has refused to comment on rumours and they should not be taken as facts until either confirmed or denied by Nintendo themselves.
