Rumour: Super Mario Bros animated film in the works

A report from the Wall Street Journal (pay wall) states that Nintendo is looking to strike a deal with Illumination Entertainment (most famous for the Minions films) and Universal Pictures to create a new animated Super Mario Bros. film.

Nintendo has been keen to expand their IPs in the last few years and they of course are working with Universal Studios in Japan to open a Nintendo section, so the team-up is not surprising.

The film is set to be an animated film and thus is not likely to be a continuation of the 1993 film starring Bob Hoskins (who is the film's biggest critic so he is also likely to not return).

Wall Street Journal has reported incorrectly on Nintendo properties in the past though, so until we hear anything official take it with a pinch of salt.
