Rumour: Wii U to Be Renamed?

Nintendo is said to be considering a new name for its next generation console...

"Serious discussions are ongoing at the highest level" as to whether to change the name of Wii U, that's according to the sources of CVG.

It is thought that there is worry over whether the next generation console will be differentiated enough from Wii in the eyes of many consumers. It comes after Nintendo made a very blatant change in marketing tone with 3DS, after concerns that some casual consumers thought it was just another DS.

Nintendo has publicly stated that it does not want to make the same mistakes as with 3DS.

A sudden name change would come as a surprise, but there is perhaps evidence that Nintendo has at least been keeping this option on the table. It's quite notable that all confirmed third party games for Nintendo's next system lack the Wii U logo on their promo material. Even Project Cars, which we reported on earlier this week, has since had the Wii U logo removed from its official website.

If we're lucky, we'll get some morsels of Wii U information from Nintendo's investor Q&A session very soon, so stay tuned.
