Sakurai Speaks: Smash Bros. may have GamePad controls, character roster will be narrowed down

The new Smash Bros. title set for Wii U and 3DS is a mysterious one, with not a single screenshot or even an official name, but because of the series glowing reputation the game is already one of the most eagerly anticipated for Wii U.
With that in mind, many people want questions answered and luckily for us, Sakurai has answered (some) of the most pressing issues which will hopefully tide us over until more concrete details emerge.
One of the most important questions for big fans of the series is how will we control it? For the previous two iterations, the Gamecube controller has been the main control scheme but with no Gamecube ports in the Wii U it seems we'll have to move on.
Sakurai has stated that he's looking into ways they can use the Wii U GamePad but he's not going to introduce complicated controls "just for the sake of it".
"The game system itself is complete, so we don't want to make it 3D or introduce complicated controls just for the sake of it. However, I am thinking of ways we can introduce a slightly different, fun experience all while keeping the usual frantic game play."
But what of the characters? Yoshito Higuchi recently stated that he'd love Tales characters to appear in the Wii U Smash Bros. but Sakurai doesn't want the game to lose focus so if any non Nintendo characters do appear, it won't be a decision that's made lightly.
"I think Snake and Sonic joining were fantastic, it made many fans happy and it broadened the Smash Bros arena. However, introducing more non-Nintendo characters willy-nilly will lose the focus of the game, so I recognise the need to narrow it down."
Sakurai recently stated the number of characters in the upcoming Smash Bros. title will be about the same as that seen in Brawl.
