Another day, another brand new amiibo announcement, although this one seemed to sprout up out of nowhere. Long have the biggest names in gaming (and Sonic) had the monopoly on the figurine range, but now the first ever indie character will have his own - the protagonist of Yacht Club Games's excellent 8-bit adventure Shovel Knight.

Like all other amiibo, Shovel Knight will unlock extra content in his game, which is still one of the best and brightest titles on both the 3DS and Wii U eShops.

Furthermore, the Shovel Knight amiibo will also be compatible with future Yacht Club Games titles on Nintendo systems - and given how the Nintendo community has fully embraced the indie studio's debut gem, we can hope for many more games in the future.

The Shovel Knight amiibo will launch some time later in 2015, but right now the developer is finishing up a big, free DLC update titled Plague of Shadows, which is set to release soon.
