Sonic Lost World producer details the multiplayer mode

Sonic Lost World was revealed last month in a Nintendo Direct Conference as part of an exclusive global partnership between Nintendo & SEGA for the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Now we're starting to get more information about the game as the producer of Sonic Lost World, Takashi Iizuka sat down in an interview with Nintendo World Report at E3 where he mainly discussed the level design between both versions and the motive behind the change in Sonic's basic gameplay.

The most interesting part of the interview came when Iizuka was asked about the multiplayer mode in both games. Here's what the producer had to say.

NintendoWorldReport: "The demos on the floor are all single player. Can you discuss the co-op and versus multiplayer?"

Takashi Iizuka: "We'll have different multiplayer modes on both Wii U and 3DS. On the Wii U, there's booth cooperative and versus multiplayer. In cooperative play, Sonic will be using the Wii U GamePad and someone can be supporting Sonic in co-op with the Wii Remote. In versus mode, one player will be playing on the TV screen and the other player will be racing using the GamePad so you don't have to have split screen. You both have your own screen and can race each other. The Wii U multiplayer is not on the Internet. It's basically everyone sitting on the same couch. The 3DS for the first time we're having 4-player versus racing over Wi-Fi and the Internet."

The producer was then asked the question that was on everybody's mind, would we see Sonic in the next Smash?

NintendoWorldReport: "One more question here. Sonic was very popular in Smash Bros. for Wii. Is there any possibility of him making a return appearance in the next Smash Bros.?"

Takashi Iizuka: "All we can say is that we also think it would be awesome if he was in the next Smash Bros. So yea, but that's more of a question for Nintendo than us."

It seems that Iizuka and Co. would also like to see Sonic as a playable character in the next Smash Bros. game but for now we'll just have to wait and see it that happens.

What were your thoughts on the multiplayer mode?

The Wii U version is offline based and consists of a co-operative mode, with one player on the GamePad and the other supporting them with the Wii Remote and a 2-player splitscreen versus mode via the TV screen or one player using each screen (one on the GamePad and one on the TV).

However the 3DS will see a 4-player online versus mode instead.

Are pleased with the different multiplayer functionalities? is this what you expected? do you think Sonic will make his return to the Smash Bros. series?
