Splatoon 3 got off to an unbelievable start in Japan, selling 3.45 million copies in its first 3 days on sale. This is not only the biggest launch Nintendo has had in Japan, it’s the biggest videogame launch ever in the region.

The previous 3 day record holder was Animal Crossing New Horizons with 1.88 million, meaning not only did Nintendo break their previous record, they doubled it.

Here’s the official word from Nintendo:

Nintendo Co., Ltd. (HQ: Kyoto, Minami-ku, Japan; Representative Director and President: Shuntaro Furukawa) announced that domestic sales of the Splatoon 3 game for the Nintendo Switch system have surpassed 3.45 million units in the first three days since its launch on September 9, 2022. This is the highest domestic sales level for any Nintendo Switch software within the first three days. This includes both packaged and downloadable versions.

The franchise has come a long way from its 2015 Wii U debut and is undoubtedly one of Nintendo’s biggest success stories of the last decade with Smash representation, live hologram concerts and more merchandise than you can squirt ink at.
