Super Mario Maker 2 online multiplayer only works with random people

GameXplain reached out to Nintendo today, who confirmed circulating reports that Super Mario Maker 2's online multiplayer mode will only allow you to play with random people.

The news will come as a disappointment for people hoping to try out courses online with their friends. If you want to try your hand at the user-generated levels with other people you need to actually see them in person, although four people can use one Switch meaning you can force random colleagues and relatives to indulge you without having to spend too much.

As with the original you can share creations with friends by sharing the course ID, but if you wanted to actually play it with them you better hope your friends are nearby.

In a separate video, GameXplain also revealed that amiibo - and thus mystery mushroom costumes - will not be supported this time around and unlike the original almost everything will be available from the start.

You can play Super Mario Maker 2 with any combination of controllers that you want and if you're using the editor when the Switch is docked the toolbars can be quickly accessed by pressing the control pad in that direction, although obviously the handheld mode is going to provide the most natural form of editing.

The new story mode will also be open ended, meaning that it will change based on the choices you make n the game.

More details about the game can be found in GamXplain's video and of course expect more information to be released before the game's launch at the end of next month.
