The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild overworld "twelve times the size of Twilight Princess"; control options detailed

More details of the hotly anticipated next Zelda adventure have emerged from E3, with amiibo support and controller options among the information trickling out.

Taking to members of the industry on the eve of the show, series director Eiji Aonuma said that the new Hyrule overworld in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is twelve times the size of Twilight Princess' Hyrule, so there will certainly be plenty to explore. There will be more than 100 shrines dotted around the map, which will in effect be mini-dungeons offering a prize of some sort on top of the usual main dungeons.

The function of the Wolf Link amiibo that came with Twilight Princess HD was also revealed. Link doesn't have a full-time companion in this new adventure, but can use the amiibo to summon Wolf Link to attack nearby enemies, scavenge for items and hunt wildlife. There will be other amiibo available too; an Archer Link, a horseback Rider Link, plus an amiibo of the spider-like mech featured in the trailer. When asked by Eurogamer's Tom Phillips what their benefits will be, he said: "Please look forward to seeing what they do."

Eurogamer's preview also suggested that both the Wii U and NX version will be the same content-wise, and you will be able to play with the Pro Controller, meaning that a controller with a screen is not a foregone conclusion for Nintendo's next console.
