TIME interview sheds light on Switch matters

In a recent interview with TIME magazine, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima has revealed some more details about the upcoming Nintendo Switch. A number of features of the Switch are still unclear. Luckily the interview brings us one step closer to everything the Switch can and cannot do.

When talking about the Switch's online functions, mr. Kimishima confirms that until autumn online services will be free, and after that will cost 2,000 - 3,000 yen. He understands that it is cheaper than competition, but notes that this doesn't mean that the service will be less than the competition. He states: "...we are really dedicated to bringing our online business to the consumer at that price point. Online play with Switch is going to be something that's key to the business, and we had a ton of discussion internally within Nintendo to come up with what we thought was a reasonable price on how we can connect with our consumers."

About the apps on the Switch he mentions that on release there won't be a web browser available. Earlier it already became known that at launch there won't be streaming media on the Switch such as Netflix. This is because "...all of our efforts have gone toward making Switch an amazing dedicated video game platform".

Creating Miis is still possible on the Switch and works similar to creating one on the WiiU or 3DS. However you don't need a specific app for it. You can create your mii through the System Setting and Profile screens.

eShop is also confirmed at launch, and software can be purchased and downloaded from day 1. There is no mention of the Virtual Console yet however.

What is mentioned is Virtual Reality. Mr. Kimishima confirms that VR is still being looked into, and that the Switch has the power to run VR applications. He states: "The question, of course, is "What is the best way to bring virtual reality to our customers as a form of entertainment?" Not just, "Hey, look! It's realistic!" or whatever, but what is the best way to use this technology to bring something fun to our consumer base? We are definitely looking at that."

The interview goes on and also highlights mobile efforts and more about the presidency of Tatsumi Kimishima. If you are curious, you can read the full interview here.
