Twitch to be Removed from Nintendo Switch eShop

The Twitch app on Nintendo Switch is set to cease operations soon. You have just a few days left to download it, and it will stop working completely on January 31st.

Here’s the full statement from Twitch:

We will be ending support for the Twitch App on Nintendo Switch. Starting November 6th 2023, new users will no longer be able to download the Twitch app in the Nintendo eShop. Existing users will lose access to the Twitch App on Nintedo Switch starting January 31, 2024.

The Twitch app launched on Switch back in 2021, providing Switch gamers the chance to watch their favourite streams on the system. While it wasn’t possible to stream your own gameplay from the Switch itself, this was a desire of Twitch itself, who promised a future update down the line, but this obviously never came to fruition.

The app has been met with criticism, mainly due to its lack of features, as it wasn’t possible to view live chat, or to partake in chat on the system itself. There were also widespread reports of the app being somewhat unreliable with frequent, and seemingly random, crashes being a common occurrence.

In spite of these issues, it was still a popular streaming service on the Switch, something that the console is still mysteriously, considerably lacking, with big names such as Disney+ and Netflix still being absent from the popular device.

The lack of streaming services on the Switch is quite bizarre given the history Nintendo has with streaming TV content on its consoles. The Wii was one of the first ways to watch Netflix on your TV, receiving one of the earliest apps for the service back in 2010, when smartphones were still a rarity and Smart TV’s were but a dream.

The Wii U also launched with Netflix back in 2012, offering the ability to watch on your TV or the Wii U Gamepad. Both consoles also got apps for BBC iPlayer, Love Film (RIP), Amazon Prime and more.

Given the time period though, and that streaming via console was one of the few ways to get those services on TV’s back then, it makes sense it was a bigger priority in the early 2010’s.

Would you like to see more streaming services on the Switch, or do you believe it’s no longer a necessity given the huge number of devices that are capable of it these days?
