Wii U will be region-locked

Carrying on a home-console tradition, Wii U will be region-locked. For European gamers, it means that you will only be able to play games from PAL territories on a PAL console.

The news came from the latest edition of Japanese mag Famitsu - translated on NeoGAF: "What can be played on the Wii U is restricted by a region-lock feature; software not sold in the same region cannot be played."

The news was later confirmed by Nintendo UK via Eurogamer.

It is not entirely surprising news, given Nintendo's long-standing publisher-centric strategy of region-locking its consoles, but it's nice (or not) to have confirmation.
