Those of you that enjoyed the first installment of Conflict Desert Storm will be pleased as the sequel looks to have improved over it's predecessor graphically as well as technically. Those of you that have never played Conflict Desert Storm might just have to consider starting sometime soon. CDS2 is looking very promising so far.
To describe this game in a sentence it's a 3rd to 1st person tactical teamwork shooter. After choosing whether to play as the american delta force or british SAS you and your team get put into a mission, The briefing cinematics and use of ingame footage in these are visually impressive but also make you professional and almost gung ho.
When the game actually starts it takes a little bit of fiddling to get all your team to follow you, but I found after around half an hour of playing I knew all the commands for team mates. As well as being able to command your team mates you can also switch to them and control them manually to use each of their individual skills (from sniping to explosives) whilst the others will continue on their given tasks (whether it be sitting somewhere to hide or providing covering fire with a machine gun emplacement).
Playing the game with just your team following you all guns blazing leads to an early death and rather boring gameplay, however if you move your team members into vantage points so you all stay covering each other leads to hugely rewarding firefights and a feeling of teamwork and comradery in the game. There are many nice little moments I came across just playing the first level for example when a team mate loses all their health they go into a "injured" state and can be healed by any team member with a medic pack. However, healing a team member leaves you open to attack so it's necessary to have another team mate covering you. As you can imagine, being ambushed whilst healing only to watch your sniper completely wipe out your enemy is amusing.
As well as having computer allies I am certain that the cube version will allow for multiplayer teamwork, if only nintendo got it into their heads that the linkup system would be a GREAT idea the multiplay on this game could be very cool, however I can see it being rather difficult with any screen smaller than full.
The game does have its flaws as with all games that use AI bots but none of them were horribly costly to the way the game plays, Having only played the first mission I can't say whether or not the game as a whole will be as good as it's demo. But as it stands I'd say we have another game to look forwards to on the cube.
