Preview: Gotcha Force

Have Capcom stolen all of the old Transformer toys and made a game out of them? That's what Gotcha Force looks like, and in my opinion, this is a good thing.

Actually, they're not Transformers, it was just the first thought that flew through my mind when I watch the game footage. Apparently, they're Borgs, and they like a good scrap. They have been sent by an evil alien race to take over the planet. Fortunately there are some kids with vehicles of their own, that also like a scrap. FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!

Gotcha Force is a two on two team game, with either four human players, or computer AI filling in the gaps. One team then plays the good guys, and one team the bad, then you use your robot powers to fight to the death. Team play is emphasised to such an extent that individual players don't have energy meters, but there is a team one. As such if one character is gettign a good beating, both will suffer. Because of this you will have to look out for each other, which will no doubt lead to plenty of real life arguments!

There is a huge range of Borgs in the game, it has been rumoured that Capcom would like to feature over 100 unique vehicles in the game. Whether they achieve this impressive figure remains to be seen though. The abilities and types of robot are quite different, some are land based and tank-like, others have the ability to hover. The weapons of the robots are also quite different, from cannon blasts, to beam type weapons and standards guns. If you really want to cause damage though, it comes back to team play. The two selected robots of a team can become one, much bigger robot.

The look of the game really makes you think of childhood toys, not just because of the look of the Borgs, but also the surroundings. They appear to range from school playgrounds to children's bedrooms.

It appears that you will not be able to use Borgs until you have beaten them, so in that sense it may have some of the collectable appeal that Pokemon had as you attempt to beat more Borgs so that you can see them in action.

Some will say that this title looks childish, and yes, perhaps it does, but more important than that, it looks fun. It looks like it could be one of those multi-player games that you just love to play with your mates, plus it also has the collecting of Borgs to keep you playing on your own.
