Preview: Haunted Mansion

This game sees our green clad hero bravely exploring a cartoon style haunted mansion, trapping ghosts in a bid to save himself. No, sadly, despite first appearances this isn't a preview for Luigi's Mansion 2, but a game to tie on with the latest offering from Disney. This time the hero is realtor, Zeke who must clear a mansion of ghosts or die of fear. Like 'Pirates of the Caribbean' the film was inspired by a ride at Disney World, making this the game-of-a-film-of-a-ride. Great stuff!

The mechanics of the game are also similar to Luigi's Mansion. The game is divided up into rooms, with puzzles to solve in each to capture the ghosts with your lantern. But this time, instead of 50 Boos, you have 999 souls to lay to rest. However, the puzzles in Haunted Mansion seem to be quite a bit more complex than the relatively simple puzzles in Luigi's Mansion. One sees you becoming part of a game of pool, and pool skills are required to complete it.

You defeat a ghost by solving to puzzle, and then beating them in combat, finally using your lantern to capture them. The combat seems to be done using items picked up from your surroundings, however actually specifics are limited, due to the fact all the trailers released so far for the game are spectacularly uninformative. One thing that is apparent however, is that the mansion, like Luigi's Mansion has a resident psychic, who gives you tips in times of need. But, unlike previous in game psychics, she appears much more often, and gives you tips all the time. Luckily though, this feature can be turned off.

The graphics are very nice. The character models are well made, and have good movement. Zeke has a range of expressions, and expresses fear very well, with crouching posture and creaky steps. The ghosts are also impressively made. The transparencies work well and they look very ghostly. The mansion itself is very convincing, with spooky objects, like busts and the obligatory haunted eyes paintings sprinkled liberally around the building. The textures are done well, with detail on most surfaces. The lighting effects are good, and add eerie shadows and glow to the environment. My only problem with the graphics is that they aren't really pushing the hardware in anyway. Maybe when seen in actual game action what is done will look more impressive, but it is a simple enough task to create a mansion, given that it is a series of rooms, rather than a large expansive area.

The music is great. It is very atmospheric, and responds well to what is happening around you. In game sound effects seem to be all good too, although I can't go into to much detail about them either, due to the terrible trailers that have been released so far for the game.

All in all I think this will be an enjoyable, if not revolutionary, game. It seems entertaining, and reports from the US, where the game has been release are all very favourable, especially with fans of the theme parks. While it may not be to everyone's tastes, those looking for a basic but fun game could do a lot worse than getting hold of this. However, I would find it hard, based on what I have seen so far, to recommend it over Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy, which is also out soon.
