Preview: Pterosaur - Dawn of Destruction

Atomic Planet, previously known as the developers of Mike Tyson's Boxing, have recently announced a number of titles undergoing development for the GameCube, one of which is the intriguing Prehistoric adventure, "Pterosaur: Dawn of Destruction".

The 'Dawn of Destruction' in the title refers to the end of the world as they know it, and it's your quest in the game to try to outrun the oblivion that the dinosaur's world is falling into.

The game is said to be a mix of 3D action and platforming, combined with flight action. Like Capcom's upcoming game, 'Dead Phoenix', atomic Planet promise to make these flying sections as innovative as possible. You will be expected to master the thermals in order to make the most of your gliding ability, whilst also keeping a close eye on the Pterosaur's limited energy supply, or you could end up plummeting to your doom.

The game world is in a constant state of change, with the destruction taking place that lead to the extinction of the dinosaurs, so as you progress through the game you will learn new skills in order to adapt to this landscape. You will also be able to interact with other non-playable dinosaurs which also have their own survival to worry about, and work together in order to solve some of the many puzzles you will encounter along the way.

It seems that no adventure game can be without it now, so 'Dawn of Destruction' will also contain stealth elements. Exactly how a Pterosaur can be stealthy, I'm not sure, but given the prehistoric setting, it could well mean avoiding the larger dinosaurs, T-Rex's and the like, that would think twice before making you a meal, end of the world or not.

When you're not avoiding the larger creatures, combat will also be involved in the game. This is said to take on two different forms, when you are in flight, and when you are grounded. If that's not enough for you there will also be a host of things to collect, as well as different flight challenges that could well be reminiscent of the classic hand-gliding challenges in Pilotwings. Oh yeah, and there are fishing sections too. Well I guess we've all got to eat, Pterosaur's on the eve of extinction are no exception.

All in all 'Pterosaur: Dawn of Destruction' seems to be aiming rather high. A combination of combat and stealth and adventure has been dome before, but adding the flight sections into the game is something else. Atomic Planet are competing with one of the big boys with these flight sections though, Capcom's 'Dead Phoenix' has already turned heads, so Atomic Planet they will need to get a publisher behind them with the ability to get this game noticed. It has a great deal of potential though, and the Prehistoric setting should certainly be appealing to a great deal of gamers. If they can balance out all of the different elements in the game, as have the right push from a developer, it could be one of those surprise hits.
