You might know it as Panel De Pon or Tetris Attack, but probably you'd recognize it as Pokémon Puzzle League/Challenge. Whatever you call it, the classic puzzle game stays true to its core and is ready to please the fans and newcomers. For those who have no idea what this game is about, it's pretty simple: you have lots of different coloured blocks and you have to get three or more together, horizontally or vertically and to do that you can only shift the blocks left or right. Simple, right? Yes, but once you get into the game, you'll see that there is a lot of underlying complexity that you must explore if you want to be really good.
In Planet Puzzle League you hold the DS like a book and play in the right (bottom) screen. You can use the stylus, which makes the game very easy to pick up, fun to play and more accurate, or you can use the typical D-Pad and buttons if the touch screen doesn't suit your tastes. The game is ripe with different modes: you can play by yourself against the clock, aim for high scores, solve puzzles, missions or clear a certain number of lines. You can also play against the computer, with more 3 friends or online, using Nintendo WFC. The online mode is also very robust, offering the chance to play against friends using friend codes (in this case you can use voice chat), randomly against adversaries that match your skill or share your birthday and if you want to relax, there's always a free play mode that doesn't keep track of your stats, so you can lose to your heart's (dis)content.
The game features a very simplistic but highly stylish interface with dynamic backgrounds that you can choose before playing and lots of different sets of blocks. The music is very varied, ranging from techno to classical Japanese tunes, always according to the background that was chosen and if you've played Advance Wars, you'll notice similarities between some of the musics (which makes sense, considering it's the same developer).
It seems that Intelligent Systems made a very addictive, varied and well assembled puzzle game. The game comes out in Europe on the 29th of June, so wait for our final verdict.
