Top Gun was an excellent film and made Tom Cruise into what he is today. Intense action, great storyline and overall a superb film. After many years the licence has gone to Digital Integration who are known as relatively good flight sim' developers. But will it fly high or soar like a concrete block being dropped off the empire state building?
The graphics featured in the GC version of Top Gun: Combat Zones are slightly better than the PS2 version, which should please Cube enthusiasts. But they still don't impress as much as the more superior cube titles such as Rogue Squadron, they just aren't as detailed or rich. They lack the elements that make games look great and stand out from the crowd…your cube will be able to do better than this. But it doesn't look bad, although the graphics are somewhat basic; they are clean and will hopefully run at a good frame-rate.
Top Gun isn't the most immediate flight simulator or the deepest; it's a nice balance between the two factions. It plays smoothly and has been promised to be better for the Cube. It admittedly isn't the best flyer in the world but flight sim' fanatics can't go too far wrong with Top Gun…from what I've played of the PS2 version.
There will be a lot to do, with a massive 34 missions that did hold a fairly repetitive structure on the PS2 but thankfully will be redesigned for the Cube. Missions will include dogfights and destroying things naturally, if you're looking for something original look elsewhere. The levels will take place in a land, sea or air locale and range from South East Asia to Northern Russia. It's nice to know that some developers are actually spending time on making a game better value for money.
There are a total of 5 planes to crash and burn in with a few more to unlock to give the game further lengths. There are also pilots from the film like Maverick and Viper so this might further the experience as you become your favourite pilot from the film.
Okay, so it isn't going to be game of the year but for a flight simulation game this is alright- provided that the tweaks promised are made to the game engine. My prediction: A low 7 if the alterations are made. Top Gun will fly (or crash) onto shelves in June.
